WEDU PBS sends out a monthly programming guide/magazine to its members who donate a certain amount ($60 per year, or $5 per month). This magazine is a guide to select WEDU and PBS programming, supported by ads from underwriters. I curate, design, and layout the magazine in full each month.
I choose the cover subject matter with my Executive Editor and our President/CEO, and then assemble the artwork on my own from PBS assets and various other places; sometimes I use a TV program’s already-mostly-developed key art from PBS, but often I have to design something from scratch. Here are some past covers of the magazine:
Across six different channels, WEDU broadcasts hundreds of hours of programming each month, and obviously I can’t include all of it in the magazine. So, I also choose what to feature in each issue. Having worked for PBS for years now, I have a good grasp on what our viewers watch and want to watch, so I decide which programming makes it into the magazine each month. I gather all of the content from a plethora of sites and sources, choosing the photos as well.
Here are a few spreads from some recent issues:
Sometimes I create feature ‘ads’ for our station’s original local programming. Three such ads (for WEDU’s Greater Sarasota, Florida This Week and Arts Plus) are featured on the left page of this spread:
*The following spread also features a half-page vertical ad from a sponsor (right half of the right page); I designed the whole spread EXCEPT that ad.
